The events and hospitality industries are exciting ones to work in. From both a business and a personal perspective, the prospect of running a nightclub is uniquely appealing. Owning and or operating a nightclub is an exciting venture. It offers a unique opportunity to operate an entertainment venue that showcases and caters to your preferred tastes. However, it will not be an easy ride!

A nightclub is a complex operation. They come in all variety of shapes and sizes and cater to every conceivable taste. However, if you don’t make sure to take out the correct insurance on your nightclub, then otherwise manageable incidents can end up putting a serious drain on your resources. In the rare cases of serious loss of, or damage to, property, having nightclub insurance in place can make the difference between the business failing completely, and a smooth, if prolonged, recovery to its previous state.

Potential Loss of Licence

In cases where serious events occur, and the nightclub is found to be liable, the potential penalties can include the loss of the venue’s licence. Venue’s need to be licensed to host music entertainment, and to sell alcohol, among other things. These licenses are awarded individually and can be revoked individually, although in practice, losing just one of them often has the same outcome – forcing the venue to close until it is recertified.

The popular London nightclub Fabric is a perfect example of how even a well established, popular club can be hit hard by having a licence suspended or revoked. In the case of Fabric, it was an inadequate drugs policy which led to the nightclub having its licence revoked. Two people sadly died drug-related deaths while at the venue. This, in addition to poor staff intervention when drug-use or drug-related illness was reported, was cited among the list of justifications for the revocation.

A situation like the one Fabric found itself in will almost certainly result in its closure, at least while an investigation is carried out. For most businesses, even a single night of closure means forfeiting some pretty significant profits, and so the threat of having a licence revoked is an effective one. However, if you find yourself facing temporary closure, then nightclub insurance will help to soften the blow.

If your nightclub is successful, then it is going to be hosting large crowds of enthusiastic revellers. It is all but guaranteed that something is going to get broken or damaged at some point. Whether it’s club equipment, fixtures, furniture, or just about anything else. Even if your clientele are particularly gentle with their surroundings and nothing gets accidentally broken, there is always going to be a degree of inevitable wear and tear. In more sinister scenarios, club equipment often makes an attractive target for thieves, especially as a lot of high-end audio equipment is easy to conceal and carry.

The tragic Station Nightclub fire is a harrowing example of how quickly a fire can take hold of a building if just a few regulations are ignored.

Clearly, with an incident such as the Station Nightclub fire, insurance is the last consideration, however, the speed with which the flames rendered the entire structure unsalvageable illustrate what fire can do. In an empty nightclub that catches fire while no one is around, even with sprinkler systems and alarms, there is the potential for huge damage to property.

Fires can be started by carelessness, but sometimes electrical issues can also be to blame. Whenever you have construction work going on, especially if wires are being exposed, there is a heightened risk of a fire starting from an electrical spark.

Public Liability

In a busy nightclub, you will have the potentially explosive combination of lots of people packed in close together and alcohol flowing (relatively) freely. Even with vigilant and professional bartenders and security staff, almost all nightclubs eventually have an incident where an altercation breaks out and someone is injured. Nightclub insurance will give you public liability coverage, covering you in the case of a patron seeking compensation for an injury they sustained on your premises.

If someone is injured because they slipped on a wet floor that wasn’t clearly marked, then you could be held liable. These claims would be pursued in the same way as claims that a failure to promptly intervene on the part of club security has led to people being injured needlessly. Even if an initial incident or altercation cannot be stopped, if the delay in the security staff responding leads to excessive, avoidable injuries, then the club can still be considered liable.

A nightclub is one of those businesses that are likely to really feel even a single night of lost profits. As a result, it isn’t good enough to react to situations when they arise. Instead, nightclubs need to be proactive in preventing incidents. Nightclub insurance will protect you financially when things do go wrong and it is important that you choose your plan carefully.

Modafinil As A Smart Drug For Students – The Debate - Entrepreneur Podcast Network – EPN

With students gearing up for exams in just a few months’ time, many are turning to so-called smart drugs to enhance their memory and cognitive performance. Modafinil is one such drug and is well- known by many students at top universities who use it to help them get through the challenging exam period.

But Modafinil is actually a prescription-only medicine prescribed for sleep disorders including narcolepsy, and the impact of using it long-term to improve cognitive ability is not known, so students could be putting their health at risk.

UK educational institutions are now debating what to do about this issue, which is on the increase. Whereas before students were taking drugs to get high, now it seems they are turning to prescription medicines to improve their work. The question is – is it tantamount to cheating?

Many universities have policies in place to tackle illegal drug use but Modafinil is a medicine so the issue becomes more complex. Particularly as students are either buying it illegally online or feigning symptoms to get a prescription.

Support and education programmes to advise students about these smart drugs are being set up within universities to help them understand the risks, but also to offer them alternative help when facing the struggle of exam season.

Pressures to succeed as well as the financial issues associated with university fees, can lead students to turn to smart drugs to improve their memory, concentration, and mental stamina to enhance their exam performance and make sure they succeed.

Short-term it seems that one of the reasons Modafinil is so popular is that it does actually work. Studies have shown it does indeed improve cognitive function so it really is a smart drug. And it also comes with minimal side effects when used short-term which is another benefit for students. It’s the long-term impact which isn’t understood.

However, this doesn’t seem to be deterring the students from taking it as a recent survey showed around 15% of students at Oxford University had taken Modafinil without a prescription for it, to improve their academic performance.

And a wider survey across Europe showed that between 10% and 15% of students had tried to enhance their performance by taking some kind of drugs or alcohol at least once, when they were faced with exams or dissertations to write.

So what is Modafinil and what does it actually do? 

Modafinil is prescribed by health professionals for adults who suffer from narcolepsy to help them stay awake because it works as a wakefulness-promoting agent on the central nervous system.

Narcolepsy is a neurological condition which causes excessive daytime sleepiness and sudden, inappropriate sleep attacks during the day.

Common symptoms of narcolepsy include:

  • Feeling sleepy during the day
  • Falling asleep suddenly during the day
  • Sleep paralysis (temporarily being unable to move when you first wake up)

There are some circumstances where Modafinil cannot be prescribed, including to patients who suffer from an irregular heartbeat, uncontrolled blood pressure problems, or are allergic to any of the ingredients, so students taking it without a prescription need to be aware of the potential dangers.

Modafinil is also known to worsen any of these conditions, so shouldn’t be taken by anyone suffering from depression, psychosis, mania, bipolar disorder or low moods. Again, if students are feeling the pressure and perhaps suffering from anxiety, depression or feeling low as a result, taking Modafinil could have negative consequences.

It also interferes with the way hormonal contraceptives work so alternative birth control methods would be required while using it and for two months after stopping Modafinil. Anyone using it should always follow the dosage guidelines and never take more than the prescribed dose.

Are there any side effects from taking Modafinil? 

Potentially, any medication can cause side effects but different people will react differently. An allergy to Modafinil could result in swelling of the face, mouth or throat, itchiness, rash or problems breathing – anyone experiencing any of these symptoms should seek medical help.

Some of the more common side effects of Modafinil include headaches, dizziness, tiredness and insomnia but the patient information leaflet contains full details of all side effects and potential conflicts with other medications.

There is no doubt that universities and colleges will continue to debate the issue, with some even considering drug tests before exams to level the playing field for all students. Anyone who uses Modafinil should make themselves fully aware of all the risks, side effects and contra-indications before use.


How the UK’s Government Debt increases by £129,556 every minute - Entrepreneur Podcast Network – EPN

The headlines are full of numbers, especially with the concerns around Brexit and how much money the UK will save by leaving and the ongoing efforts of government to save money. But with lots of different numbers being quoted, what’s the true picture?

First let’s look at debt. Because the government currently spends more than it takes in through taxes, it has to borrow money to cover the shortfall so it can keep public services going. Usually when debt is talked about in the media, net debt is used. This is the total debt minus whatever the government has.

Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is the total value of all the goods produced within a country. This gets talked about a lot alongside Government Debt because thinking about debt as a percentage of GDP allows easy comparison between different countries which otherwise would be hard to compare. When you see countries ranked by the size of their economies, that’s GDP.

That leaves deficit. Remember that gap between what the government earnt in taxes and spent on public services that was leading to the government having to borrow? That’s the deficit. If the government was making more than it spent, then it would be in surplus.

So, what’s going on in the UK? This research from Solution Loans shows a number of areas of the UK economy as well as personal finance numbers minute by minute and shows UK Government debt increasing by £129,556 every minute.

That’s a staggering amount but it used to be much higher. When the current government took over the amount borrowed that year was about 9.9% of GDP, thanks to the financial crash. Its now down to 2.6%.

However, whist the amount borrowed this year is down on previous years (i.e. the deficit has come down) the total debt is still very large. It currently stands at 87% of GDP. This means that even if the government did manage to generate a surplus, it would have to keep that surplus in place for a long time to eat away at the debt. In short, it’ll be a long time before that national debt goes anywhere.

Must Have’s for a Balanced Life - Entrepreneur Podcast Network – EPN

I have noticed a bunch of posts and challenges popping up lately where people are posting their “must have’s” for various skills sets, such as crafting, cooking, business, working out, wardrobes, etc. It made me stop and think, what are some of the must have that we should all have for a balanced life? Don’t get me wrong, I agree that a great pair of winter boots, or the right pair of fuzzy slippers feels like an essential in Chicago winters, but something made me want to step back and think even further about my overall well-being. What really feeds us and keep us balanced? I think the very heart of things starts off with defining for ourselves what balance means to us. While we may need some of these things in different amounts, there are a few fundamentals that each of us require.

We need a balance of independence and togetherness. What this exact balance is for each of us personally, may vary from person to person, but it is important nonetheless. Each of us needs time alone to decompress and have some personal space. We also need to feel a sense of connectedness with others. To little or too much of one can make us feel out of sorts. Too much time by ourselves can make us feel lonely, and too much time with others can make us feel anxious, so we need to make sure that we are making the effort to strike the right balance for ourselves. Sometimes it is a system of trial and error to find out what is the right amount for us personally, but we just need to listen to our inner voice when it tells us that it is too little or too much.

Another essential piece of a balanced life is self-care. We always seem to be able to tell others to take care of themselves, but we don’t take the time to practice the same love and patience with ourselves. Doing things like getting enough sleep each day by going to bed at the same time each night and getting up at the same time each morning. Eating foods that nourish you. Drinking 8 glasses of water each day. Eating well year-round. While traditions are wonderful, and holiday food is delicious, you can enjoy in moderation, and not have to diet and fast in January. If you keep the idea of nourishing yourself year-round in mind, but allowing yourself to enjoy things in moderation, you never have to put yourself through diets, starvation, fasts, cleanses, and the like. That is balance.

Surround yourself with people who feed your soul, and not people who pollute it. By this I mean, do not feel guilty about deciding to set boundaries with, or remove toxic people from your life. We should all involve ourselves with people who are positive influences in our lives. Those who build us up, support us, are honest, but fair, and those who have our best interests at heart. It is about giving ourselves permission to let people go from our lives who make us feel bad about ourselves, or who take every opportunity to criticize our choices and our lives. There is enough negativity in the world, we don’t need to choose to have it in those closest to us.

Remove negative self-talk from your life. Spend one day and be mindful of how often you start to think something negative about yourself, someone else, or the outcome of a situation. Now think about how much better your outlook and your life might be if you simply stopped yourself at the start of these thoughts. I have worked with many people to remove these thoughts from their daily lives, and the difference has been profound. Challenge yourself to see how much more balance your can restore to your life, and how much negativity you can remove from it, by removing negative self-talk.

Scale down and get organized. Even if you have a lot of “stuff,” you can get it organized. Make it your goal to make your space your solitude. Your home is supposed to be where you are at peace. Clutter genuinely creates anxiety. Make this the month and the year where you decide to organize, donate, and get control of your home. If you have not used it in a year, donate it. If things belong together, get storage and contain them. Group things together where they make sense. Move things where they work and function for you. Get rid of things that no longer work, are expired, are outdated, or that could do someone else more good than they are doing sitting in a pile in your home. You will not miss them, and you will feel good for sharing the love. Nothing feels quite as good as completely organizing and getting control of your space. It truly makes it feel like a functional home that is “yours,” and that you can live and breath in.

Let 2018 be the year where you finally restore balance into your life. As you can see from this list, it really is simple. Just a few thoughtful adjustments to your daily and weekly routine, and you could find yourself feeling far more centered and peaceful then you have in quite some time.
