The TOTO game was launched in 1968 and is the first lottery game to enter the Singapore Pools.

It was a combination of ‘Totalizator’, a device that shows the number and amount of bets staked on a race, and ‘Lotto’; hence, the name, ‘Toto’.

Running for about four decades now, the game has evolved so much. For example, the snowballing feature, which allows the prize amount to grow if there were no winners, was introduced in 1981. This helped the game to entice and gain more bettors. Another feature, the System Entry option, was introduced later in the same year.

System Entry lets the bettors select up to twelve numbers, in contrast to ordinary entries with six numbers. The idea is that choosing more numbers gives you more Ordinary Entries in one bet. There are six system bet types: System 7 with seven total numbers selected. This equals to seven ordinary entries and requires a minimum bet amount of $7. Next is system 8 with eight numbers selected, 28 ordinary entries for $28. System 9 accounts for nine numbers selected, 84 ordinary entries for a minimum bet of $84. System 10 equals to ten numbers selected with 210 ordinary entries for $210. Then there’s System 11 with 11 selected numbers, 462 ordinary entries for $462. And System 12, 12 selected numbers, 924 ordinary entries, all for $924.

Then about twenty years after TOTO lottery was launched, in June 1988, the format of the game was updated from a ‘5-out-of-49’ to a ‘6-out-of-42’ format. The top prize reached a sum of $300,000 then. Then in 1997, the game was again changed to a ‘6-out-of-45’ format. This had a guaranteed jackpot prize of $500,000!

In October 2014, Toto was updated to its current format. Today, bettors have a chance of getting the jackpot with six winning numbers and one additional number which are drawn from 49 numbers each Monday and Thursday. The Jackpot sum now begins from $1,000,000! But winning that million dollars is not that easy. In fact, the odds of winning the Toto jackpot is one in almost 14 million!

Today, there are seven prize groups. The first and least is seventh, which requires three winning numbers. This has a probability of 1 in 61. Next is group number six with three winning numbers and an additional number of 1 in 812. The fifth group has four winning numbers, 1 in 1,083. Group number four needs four winning numbers and an additional number, that’s 1 in 22,197. Next is group number three with five winning numbers and 1 in 55,491 odds of winning. Then comes the second group of five winning numbers and an additional number for 1 in 2,330,636. And definitely everyone’s favorite prize group, number 1 for getting all six winning numbers, which has a probability of 1 in 13,983,816! This means to have a 100% chance of winning the TOTO Jackpot, you will need to buy 13,983,816 Ordinary TOTO tickets. Or get 54 ordinary tickets to at least win something.
